An example : Conversion to wind-sourced power for production of cell culture media

FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V., located in Tilburg, the Netherlands, is one of nine Fujifilm’s main production sites in Europe, manufacturing photosensitive materials, offset plates and other products. In 2021, a new plant went into operation for producing cell culture media used in the development and manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals. With three such manufacturing centers for cell culture media—in Japan, the U.S. and Europe—Fujifilm can provide a global supply of cell culture media and respond rapidly to the needs of customers.

  • * The initiative introduced below is just an example of a manufacturing site which has addressed reduction of environmental impact from manufacturing.

To reduce the use of natural gas for steam generation, an electric boiler that runs on wind-sourced power will be introduced at the new cell culture media plant. Steps to reduce reliance on natural gas are also being taken at the existing plant with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality*1.

Also, at FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V., a large wastewater treatment facility was built on-site in 2016 that is used jointly with three other neighboring companies. This facility uses membrane bio reactor method, which is not common in the Netherlands. It is able to safely and efficiently treat 10 million liters of wastewater daily, helping to lighten the burden on other treatment facilities in the area.
