FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V., located in Tilburg, the Netherlands, is one of nine Fujifilm’s main production sites in Europe, manufacturing photosensitive materials, and other products. In 2021, a new plant went into operation for producing cell culture media used in the development and manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals. With three such manufacturing centers for cell culture media—in Japan, the U.S. and Europe—Fujifilm can provide a global supply of cell culture media and respond rapidly to the needs of customers.
FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V. is switching to wind energy for all of its power needs. Specifically, five wind turbines built on the site in 2011 generate 22% of the electricity used at the facility (actual results for FY2022). The remaining 78% is supplied by wind power energy suppliers. Thus, all of the power used at the facility comes from renewable sources.
To reduce the use of natural gas for steam generation, an electric boiler that runs on wind-sourced power will be introduced at the new cell culture media plant. Steps to reduce reliance on natural gas are also being taken at the existing plant with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality*1.
Also, at FUJIFILM Manufacturing Europe B.V., a large wastewater treatment facility was built on-site in 2016 that is used jointly with three other neighboring companies. This facility uses membrane bio reactor method, and is one of the largest plants of its kind in the Netherlands. It is able to safely and efficiently treat 10 million liters of wastewater daily, helping to lighten the burden on other treatment facilities in the area.
