TOKYO, October 14, 2024 – FUJIFILM Corporation announces the launch of the “FUJINON Lens XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR” (“XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR”) globally from end of November 2024. The lens is a new lineup of the “XF lens” interchangeable lens lineup for the mirrorless digital camera X Series that offers outstanding image quality and compact size and weight thanks to its unique color reproduction technology.
The “XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR” is a super-telephoto prime lens capable of shooting in the super-telephoto 500mm (equivalent to 762mm in 35mm format) range at an open aperture of F5.6 and featuring the highest optical performance of the “XF lens”. In addition, taking advantage of the APS-C format, which provides a 1.5 times larger image in the 35mm format equivalent, the lens is compact and lightweight, weighing only 1,335g*1 despite being a super-telephoto lens. In particular, the XF lens's superior resolution performance and high mobility, which overturns the conventional wisdom of super-telephoto lenses, make super-telephoto photography more accessible, especially when shooting birds, wildlife, aircraft, etc.
The “XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR” can further extend the focal length of the lens by combining it with teleconverters. The “FUJINON Teleconverter XF1.4X TC WR” provides a maximum focal length equivalent to 700mm (equivalent to 1067mm in 35mm format), and the “FUJINON Teleconverter XF2.0X TC WR” provides a maximum focal length equivalent to 1000mm (equivalent to 1524mm in 35mm format). In addition, a powerful 5.5-step*2 optical image stabilization mechanism has been realized by improving the detection accuracy of camera shake and optimizing the mechanism design.
- The “XF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR” has a focal length of super-telephoto 500mm (equivalent to 762mm in 35mm format), the longest*3 in the prime lens lineup of “XF lens,” and an open aperture of F5.6. In addition to sports photography, the lens is useful for shooting wild birds, wild animals, and aircraft.
- Combined with teleconverters, the focal length of the lens can be further extended. “FUJINON Teleconverter XF1.4X TC WR” provides a maximum focal length equivalent to 700mm (equivalent to 1067mm in 35mm format), and the “FUJINON Teleconverter XF2.0X TC WR” provides a maximum focal length equivalent to 1000mm (equivalent to 1524mm in 35mm format).
- The lens consists of 21 lens elements in 14 groups, including two Super ED lenses and five ED lenses. Chromatic aberration characteristic of super-telephoto lenses has been thoroughly suppressed to achieve high resolution performance. The lens fully depicts the amount of information beyond what the naked eye can see, which is unique to super-telephotography.
- While making maximum use of the characteristics of the APS-C format, which provides a 1.5 times larger image in the 35mm format equivalent, the lens is compact and lightweight, weighing only 1,335g, despite its F5.6 on a 35mm format equivalent of 762mm, through precise mechanical design. In addition, the optimal arrangement of ED and Super ED lenses minimizes chromatic aberration, which tends to occur with super-telephoto lenses, to achieve both high mobility and excellent resolution performance.
- Although super-telephoto lenses tend to have a heavy front lens element, the new lens with its optimum lens arrangement ensures a comfortable hold without feeling the weight of the front lens element. This allows users to enjoy comfortable, low-burden super-telephoto photography.
- The lens barrel is sealed in 20 places to make it dustproof, drip-proof, and resistant to temperatures as low as -10℃. In addition, the front element of the lens is coated with a fluorine coating to repel water and stains. The lens can be used safely for long hours of shooting in bad weather.
- The powerful 5.5-step optical image stabilization mechanism has been realized by improving the accuracy of camera shake sensing and optimizing the mechanism design. This allows users to comfortably enjoy hand-held photography in the super-telephoto range, where camera shake can easily affect the image quality.
- The use of an inner focus system reduces the size and weight of the focus lens. Furthermore, by driving the focus group with a high-speed linear motor, the camera achieves fast and silent AF with a minimum speed of approximately 0.33 seconds*4. Even when shooting in the super-telephoto range, where advanced focusing is required, the subject can be captured quickly and accurately, ensuring that the decisive moment is not missed.
- The Focus Preset function allows the focus to be instantly shifted to a pre-set position with the SET button. Since there is no need to refocus on the targeted subject, the operator's burden during shooting is reduced.
- Equipped with a focus limiter function*5 that limits the range of the lens drive when focusing, the lens drive time can be shortened when shooting subjects at a distance of five meters or more, enabling high-speed AF.
- The “Focus control button” is located at the tip of the lens barrel. The function assigned from AF-L/AF-ON/PRESET of the “Focus Selector” can be instantly recalled for smooth AF operation.
