TOKYO, May 16, 2024 – FUJIFILM Corporation announces the release of the “FUJINON Lens GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR” (GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR) worldwide in June and onward. The new lens expands the lineup of GF lenses available for the GFX Series of Fujifilm’s mirrorless digital cameras equipped with the large-format sensor*1 measuring approximately 1.7 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor.
The "GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR" is a super-telephoto single focal length lens capable of shooting in the ultra-telephoto 500mm (equivalent to 396mm in the 35mm film format ) range. It is the longest*2 in the "GF lens" lineup. In combination with the FUJINON Teleconverter GF1.4X TC WR, which expands the focal length of the lens, the lens can extend its focal length to a maximum of 700mm (equivalent to 554mm in the 35mm film format). In addition, a powerful 6.0-stop*3 image stabilization mechanism has been incorporated through improved image stabilization sensing accuracy and optimal mechanism design. Despite being a super-telephoto lens, it remains highly portable with a weight of approximately 1,375g.*4
The GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR maximizes the high resolving power of the GFX series to capture details that are often imperceptible to the naked eye, such as the beads of sweat on athlete during a pivotal moment in a sporting event, wrinkles on the skin of a wild animal, or a single feather on a bird. Despite being a super-telephoto lens, it maintains a compact size and light weight. The high-speed, high-precision autofocus further enhances the versatility of the GFX series, allowing for greater mobility in sports, wildlife and bird photography. This enables effortless hand-held shooting in the ultra-telephoto range, minimizing the impact of camera shake.
By enabling ultra-telephoto shooting, a challenging task for cameras equipped with larger sensors, the GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR opens up a realm of new possibilities for photographic expression.
- With a focal length of ultra-telephoto 500mm (equivalent to 396mm in 35mm format), setting a new record in the GF Lens lineup, the lens is ideal for sports, wildlife and bird photography.
- The lens can be paired with the FUJINON Teleconverter GF1.4X TC WR that extends the focal length equivalent to 700mm (equivalent to 554mm in 35mm format).
- The lens consists of 21 lens elements in 14 groups, including two Super ED lenses and five ED lenses, effectively suppressing chromatic aberration specific to super telephoto lenses and achieving high resolution performance. It accurately captures astonishing level of detail that surpass what the naked eye can perceive.
- By meticulously redesigning its components and employing lightweight parts to the extreme, the super telephoto lens has achieved a low mass of approximately 1,375g, defying conventional wisdom about large-format telephoto lenses. In addition to the lightweight design of each lens, the optimal arrangement of ED lenses and Super ED lenses minimizes chromatic aberration that is likely to occur with miniaturization, enabling both compact and lightweight construction and high resolution performance.
- Addressing a common drawback of super-telephoto lenses, which frequently feature large front lens elements, this lens utilizes an optimized lens arrangement that ensures a comfortable grip without the burdensome sensation of weight typically associated with the front of the lens. This allows users to enjoy seamless, effortless ultra-telephoto photography without discomfort.
- The lens barrel is sealed in 18 places to make it dustproof, drip-proof, and resistant to temperatures as low as -10℃. In addition, the front element of the lens is treated with a fluorine coating to repel water and dirt. The lens can be used safely for prolonged shooting sessions under unfavorable weather conditions.
- The powerful 6.0-step image stabilization mechanism has been realized by improving the accuracy of camera shake sensing and optimizing the mechanism design. This allows users to comfortably enjoy hand-held photography in the ultra-telephoto range, where camera shake can easily affect the image quality.
- While maintaining high resolution performance, it adopts an inner focus system that incorporates a smaller and lighter focus lens and drives the focus group using a linear motor. This enables a fast and silent AF with a minimum delay of approximately 0.31 seconds*5. Even in super telephoto shooting where precise focusing is required, it allows you to capture your subject quickly and accurately without missing any decisive moments.
- The Focus Preset function is featured to this lens. The focus can be shifted to a location pre-defined with the Focus Preset button*6 reducing the need for users to continuously re-adjust focus on their targeted subject.
- The lens also features the Focus Limiter*7, allowing users to restrict the lens’s AF range. This can effectively shorten AF time when photographing a subject that is five meters or further away.
- The Focus Control button*6 is placed at the front edge of the lens barrel. Press this button to instantly recall a function you have assigned with the Focus Selector*7 for smooth AF operation.
