Fujifilm launches “FUJINON HZK14-100mm”- Duvo Portable

TOKYO, August 29, 2024 – FUJIFILM Corporation announces the launch of the portable-type broadcast zoom lens “FUJINON HZK14-100mm” (Nickname: Duvo Portable) starting late September, the first wide zoom lens model in the Duvo series, which produces the highly desirable cinematic look with beautiful bokeh and offers broadcast lens operation.

The FUJINON HZK14-100mm is a dual-format lens supporting two types of large image sensors*1. While covering 14mm wide angle to 100mm mid-telephoto in Super 35, it is the smallest and lightest in the Duvo series, with 266.9mm in length and 2.54kg in weight and producing a comfortable, handheld lens. With the build-in 1.5 Expander the lens becomes a 21-150mm covering 16:9 in Large Format cameras.

Today, the broadcast industry is increasingly embracing cameras equipped with a large sensor typically used for cinematic applications, in order to produce immersive images with bokeh and high dynamic range. Accordingly, cinema camera lenses that support a large sensor are often used for shooting. However, such lenses are optimized for films and TV commercial applications and therefore have a limited zoom magnification range compared to broadcast lenses. They also require a dedicated focus operator, which is uncommon in the broadcast industry.

In response, Fujifilm has expanded its product lineup by introducing the Duvo Series, which produces cinematic looks with beautiful bokeh and offers the ease of broadcast lens operation. The box-type broadcast zoom lens FUJINON HZK25-1000mm (Nickname: Duvo Box) was released in March 2023, and the portable-type FUJINON HZK24-300mm in March 2024.

The new addition of the FUJINON HZK14-100mm portable wide-angle zoom lens to the line-up covers the wide-angle and expands the range of focal lengths available for this series from 14 to 1000mm. Wide zoom lenses are often used in combination with Steadicam*2 or crane, and the FUJINON HZK14-100mm, with its overall length of 266.9 mm and 2.54kg, can be used in various genres, such as shooting an entire stage at a music concert, or getting close to an athlete at a sports venue to capture immersive scene.

Fujifilm will continue to leverage its advanced optical technology nurtured over many years to develop and supply high-performance broadcast lenses, cinema camera lenses and accessories to address the diversifying needs of frontline video professionals.

2. Main features

(1) Compact and lightweight while covering a wide range of focal lengths

  • The lens achieves both 7.1x zoom covering 14-100mm a focal range and compact and lightweight design with 266.9mm in length and 2.54kg in weight, supporting high mobility.
  • The use of the built-in expander*3 shifts the focal lengths by 1.5 times to 21mm-150mm, allowing users to capture a far-away subject in a desirable field of view.
  • The minimum object distance of 0.6m (0.28m from front lens) enables impressive close-up shot.
  • *3 The expander can expand the image circle (circular area where light that passes through lens or lens elements forms an image) and extend the focal lengths to the telephoto side.

(2) Supporting cameras with Super 35mm sensor and sensors equivalent to full frame

  • The lens normally works with the Super 35mm sensor and supports a sensor equivalent to full frame by engaging the built-in expander to expand the image circle by 1.5 times*4.
  • When mounted on a camera equipped with a sensor equivalent to full frame, the lens delivers its maximum optical performance while maintaining the same angle of view as when used on a camera with a Super 35mm sensor.
  • *4 Capable of covering an image circle measuring 28.5mm across the entire zoom range when combined with a camera equipped with a Super 35mm sensor, and covering an image circle measuring 41.3mm across the entire zoom range when combined with a camera equipped with a sensor equivalent to 35mm full frame

(3) Cinematic visual expressions with beautiful bokeh

  • With the use of large-diameter aspherical elements and Super-ED lenses, polished to advanced precision, various forms of aberration are controlled thoroughly to achieve superb optical performance. Ghosting, lens flair and color bleeding are also suppressed to deliver natural, controllable, cinematic footage.
  • The lens has a maximum aperture of T2.9 at the wide-angle end 14mm and holds to 75mm despite being a high magnification lens that supports a large sensor. This enables filming in low-light conditions, such as indoor concerts and evening sporting events.
  • Out-of-focus areas naturally fall out-of-focus from the focal plane into the background. This produces the highly sought-after cinematic look with beautiful textures and bokeh. Allowing for the storyteller to naturally draw the attention of the viewer to the in-focus subject.

(4) Operational use with various accessories

  • Equipped with same drive unit as the portable-type broadcast zoom lens, the lens can be used in the same style as broadcast lenses with zoom and focus demands.
  • It also supports multi-camera operations, filming with multiple cameras at the same time, for efficient production.
  • The lens can be connected to a third-party wireless lens controller, a setup commonly used for movie and TV commercial production, to remotely control focus, aperture and zoom. This also supports focusing by a dedicated focus operator, which is a mainstream setup in the cinema industry.
  • The lens focus ring has a gear pitch*5 of 0.8M, which allows the use of all standard third-party accessories for movie production, e.g. Follow Focus or external motor.
  • The front diameter is 114mm, so that a matte box*6 easily be used in cinema and commercial production. Alternatively, the included rubber broadcast style lens hood with 127mm filter thread can be used.
  • *5 Distance between focus gear teeth
  • *6 Lens hood with high flexibility in attaching filters and adjusting light shielding with flags

(5) Features functions to support comfortable shooting and editing

  • Features Breathing Compensation Technology which automatically corrects focus breathing (fluctuations in the angle of view) to produce natural footage while maintaining the subject being filmed in the established field of view during changes in focus.
  • Features “Remote Back Focus” which enables the control of the Flange Focal Distance*7 from the control panel of the camera or robotic system that supports the RBF feature. It allows for more precise adjustment with the large high resolution monitor and controlled lighting in studio control room or OB Van as opposed to the onboard viewfinder.
  • Compatible with the “ZEISS eXtended Data” system developed by ZEISS based on the open /i® Technology*8 standard. It enables the recording of lens metadata (focus, zoom, and iris position) as well as lens distortion and shading corrections.
  • *7 Distance from the lens’s flange to a camera’s image sensor
  • *8 /i is a trademark or registered trademark of Cooke Optics Limited.
